The early signs of menopause – often called perimenopause – is the time leading up to menopause that marks the end of a woman’s reproductive years. If, as a woman, you feel like you may be at the beginning of some bodily changes, knowing a few of the indicators that help define this period of life are handy to recognise. So what exactly are the common early menopausal symptoms? Let’s take a look.
Spotting
The menopausal symptom of “spotting” is one symptom that should definitely not be ignored. Spotting refers to light vaginal bleeding that happens outside of regular periods. While this symptom is usually benign, any abnormal bleeding or spotting should be immediately looked at by a gynaecologist to evaluate whether there is something more serious occurring.
A Change in Cholesterol Levels
Because during menopause women experience a decline in oestrogen levels, it may also lead to unfavourable changes in your blood cholesterol levels, including an increase in “bad” cholesterol – low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol – which contributes to an increased risk of heart disease.
At the same time, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol – or “good” cholesterol – decreases in many women as they age and increases the risk of heart disease. Best to check in with a your general practitioner and get your cholesterol levels checked.

Hot Flashes and Night Sweats
While the intensity, length and frequency vary, hot flashes and “night sweats” are common during perimenopause and cause discomfort, leading to a lack of sleep. They occur in the early stages of menopause due to changing hormone levels that affect the body’s temperature.
An Overactive Bladder
As oestrogen levels diminish, the vaginal tissues can often lose lubrication and their elasticity, making intercourse painful. Low oestrogen may also leave you more vulnerable to urinary or vaginal infections. Loss of tissue tone may contribute to urinary incontinence.
Pains in Joints
Joint pain is one of the more common menopause symptoms and it can be one of the more debilitating as it reduces one’s mobility and flexibility. Often, it’s other symptoms of menopause that cause joint pain too; such as stress, hormonal changes, and weight gain. There’s good news though.
