THE EASTERN APPROACH VS

THE WESTERN MEDICINE APPROACH

Chinese medicine is an intricate system of healthcare developed over thousands of years. The therapies used by practitioners of Chinese Medicine aim to restore flow and balance within the body while facilitating the body's own ability to heal itself.

Western medicine, although most commonly accepted everywhere in the world, is actually a relatively recent phenomenon.

The Western approach clearly divides the overall health of a person from the disease. It relies on pharmaceutical therapies, usually antibiotics, to address health issues. It is a short-term ‘fix’ which addresses the solution without investigating the underlying cause of the disease or recurring illness. By contrast, TCM relies more on natural solutions, therapies and medicinal cures than pharmaceuticals. TCM views health as a balanced state of being versus disease as an unbalanced state of being. It encompasses lifestyle, habits, food, exercise and emotions and will address the entire body system. For example, if a patient gets an illness believed to be related to a deficiency in the liver, Chinese medicine will nurse the whole liver system.

Pulse testing is one of the most important techniques of TCM diagnosis. Physicians test the pulse to feel its frequencies and strength, which are associated with Qi, to diagnose the disease. The aim of natural Chinese Medicine is to help rebalance the functioning of the body’s whole system based on Yin, Yang and Qi.

Chinese herbal medicines are mainly plant based, but some preparations include minerals or animal products. They can be packaged as powders, pastes, lotions or tablets, depending on the herb and its intended use. Different herbs have different properties and can balance specific parts of the body.

The various healing herbs of TCM perform many functions such as:

  • Balancing yin and yang

  • Fighting infection

  • Raising Qi levels

  • Nourishing the blood and promote good circulation

  • Increasing or decrease dryness, heat, wind, dampness, cold or fire in the body

  • Removing toxins from your system

  • Improving digestion and absorption of nutrients

  • Increasing libido

  • Elevating organ function (for example, a healthy liver will help support positive emotional health)
